That smell typically fades after whatever coatings and whatnot have burned off the engine and surrounding components. It's a very pungent smell of hot rubber and who knows what. I have done a fair number of engines, and usually any burning smell is any form of engine paint or high temp coatings for gaskets etc on engine, and greases that get on it. But once you have a couple heat cycles, there is no reason that should ever be happening.
